Diabetic Retinopathy
Together we can stop the disease from progressing
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Retinopathy can damage your peripheral retina and central retina (macula). In the beginning stages of the disease, the retina’s blood vessel can either become blocked (leading to a shortage of blood) or leak (leading to deposition of blood and fluid in the retina). Both of these progressions can reduce vision and damage the retina.
Diabetes affects proximately 11.8% of our population. In India, there are close to 77 million people with diabetes. Diabetes is the most common cause of decreased vision. Anyone with diabetes is at the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The longer you have had diabetes, the more you risk developing diabetic eye disease.
Diabetic retinopathy treatment options:
Laser and surgical treatments available at Global Eye Hospital are highly successful in maintaining and stabilising vision. The essential diabetic retinopathy treatments include laser photocoagulation, Intravitreal injections and in some cases, Vitrectomy. You indeed optimise control over your diabetes is the mainstay of treatment.
MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)
As the name suggests, macular degeneration (age-related) commonly affects the older population ( over 60 years). At present, the most common cause of blindness in this age group. The disease’s risks may include age, genetics, smoking, diet, and diabetes. However, you are not always aware that you have this particular disease. Therefore, it is crucial to have regular eye examinations and seek specialist advice at the first signs of the disease.
Is Macular Degeneration (AMD) Treatment Permanent?
Treatments would be determined by diagnosing the patient’s macular degeneration type.
Dry Macular Degeneration
Dry macular degeneration is a gradual but more progressive type of AMD. In this, the layers of the macula slowly decline. There is no definitive treatment for dry macular degeneration. However, in such cases, taking antioxidant supplements in conjunction with a good diet and exercise can prolong the good health of the macular: slow progression and controlled vision.
Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet macular degeneration is generally a sequel to dry AMD. In this type, the fluid or blood interferes with the macular layers. Wet AMD can cause a sudden drop in the vision, usually requiring intravitreal injection to help reabsorb the fluid and recover the vision. Anti VEGF injections are a very efficient and successful treatment of AMD. Although, multiple injections may be required.
Prevention included antioxidant supplements for macula and the health of the eye. And an efficient diet and discontinuance of smoking. The treatment of age-related macular degeneration may differ depending on macular degeneration diagnosis. Our doctors are specialised in diagnosing, treating and monitoring the progression of macular degeneration.
