This is not true, as many eye diseases occur slowly without even knowing. This is why regular eye check-up is necessary to maintain your eye health. Prevention is always better than treatment. There are some common eye diseases which will occur if you neglect eye care.
Common eye conditions
Light entering our eyes passes through the eyeball, cornea, and lens and then falls on the retina to form the images we see. If the shape of the above three is slightly out of shape, there will be a refractive error, making it difficult for the light to enter the eyes and fall on the retina correctly. This type of condition is called refractive error.
There are different refractive errors based on various conditions;
- Nearsightedness or myopia is when a person faces difficulty seeing faraway objects. Light falls short of the retina.
- Farsightedness or hyperopia is when a person faces difficulty seeing objects closer to them. Light overreaches the retina.
- Presbyopia is an age-related condition which makes it difficult for a person to look at closer objects.
- Astigmatism is a curvature error which makes both closer and far away objects blur. Light falls unevenly on the retina.
Glaucoma is when excessive fluid builds up in your eyes, increasing pressure, resulting in optic nerve damage. The most common reason for blindness in elderly people nowadays is Glaucoma. Glaucoma is treated with Laser surgery or by certain medications prescribed by the doctor according to the severity.
The Macula is a part of the retina responsible for central vision. As we age, tissue breakdown occurs, making Macula thin and resulting in blurred vision. The treatment for Macular degeneration is Laser therapy or certain medications and drugs.
Diabetic retinopathy occurs because of poor control of diabetes, which damages the retina’s blood vessels, resulting in blurred vision, dark areas, difficulty identifying colours, and various other eye-related conditions. Certain surgeries like Laser surgery, Laser coagulation, etc. and medications are treatments for Diabetic retinopathy.
A cataract is a layer formed on your lens which makes your vision blurred and cloudy. To explain, it is like seeing through a fogged window. A cataract is primarily age-related, but in modern days it is occurring in younger age groups also due to various factors. A cataract is treated through surgery, where the cataract layer is removed.
