What is a laser and Laser Surgery?
A laser is a device that produces a beam of high-intensity light energy. In laser surgery for eye, the beam is focused on selective treating of the retina, leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. The energy focussed on the eye is absorbed and creates a microscopic spot to correct lesions or combine tissues together.
Retinal Problems That Can Be Improved By Laser Surgery
Our doctors at Global Eye Hospitals are experts in laser surgery. They say various retinal problems can be efficiently treated through laser surgery procedures which include central diabetic retinopathy, serous retinopathy, retinal arterial macroaneurysms, retinal vein occlusions, ocular histoplasmosis, retinal breaks. We are equipped with state-of-the-art laser technology that helps to treat most of the eye problems.
Central Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes is a chronic health condition. Improper treatment can lead to adverse health conditions. It causes blood circulation problems throughout your body which includes the eyes, nerves, and kidneys. Usually, the blood vessels of the retina look like pipes supporting to and fro motion of the blood to the eye.
In diabetes, the blood vessels may leak and make the retina to swell. In this condition, the retina doesn’t work properly and is called diabetic macular edema. Diabetic people may face vision problems when the swelling affects the central vision area. In such conditions, laser surgery is used to seal the leaks to prevent further vision loss.
In some patients new retinal blood vessels are grown to replace the closed vessels due to diabetes (proliferative diabetic retinopathy). This may sound helpful, but these new blood vessels cause blindness due to bleeding and scarring of the retina. Laser treatment can help to destroy the new vessels and prevents severe vision loss.
Central Serous Retinopathy
Central serous retinopathy (CSR) is an eye disease where fluid(serous detachment) builds up behind the retina, beneath the macula in the eye. Usually, the condition affects one eye causing blurred vision, distortion, colour blindness, blind spots, and temporary vision loss. Although most of the cases will resolve automatically, in some cases there will be severe vision loss or the leakage doesn’t seal, so laser photocoagulation is necessary for treating such persistent lesions.
Retinal Arterial Macroaneurysms(RAM)
In this condition, the artery wall of the larger retinal blood vessel becomes large and weak. They are acquired, focal expansions of the retinal arterial system. Usually, it develops in old people and hypertensive people. It may cause sudden or gradual vision loss.
Often this condition may resolve on its own over several weeks to months. However, depending on the patient’s symptoms and severity RAM can be treated through laser photocoagulation. Laser treatment for the artery and surrounding area might decrease the intraluminal pressure and thereby reduces the macroaneurysm.
Retinal Vein Occlusions
As a part of the normal ageing process, retinal veins that carry blood away from the retina get blocked which is called Retinal vein occlusion. This is common in people having diabetes or high BP. This condition causes the retina to swell with fluid and blood and leads to blurry central and peripheral vision. Sometimes, new blood vessels may grow which increases high pressure inside the eye.
Laser treatment like sectoral pan-retinal photocoagulation can help to treat the blocked veins. Macular laser treatment dries up the fluid by creating a burn on the macular area of the retina within the specific area.
Ocular histoplasmosis syndrome is an eye disease caused by spores of the Histoplasma capsulatum (histo) fungus from the lungs to the eye. They are symptomless and leads to the formation of new abnormal blood vessels underneath the retina. These blood vessels develop lesions known as choroidal neovascularization.
Photocoagulation or photodynamic therapy is the laser procedure used to treat this condition. A small powerful light beam is produced to destroy the fragile and new blood vessels and also other overlying retinal tissues.
Retinal Breaks or Detachment
Retinal tears occur as part of normal ageing or due to an eye injury or following cataract surgery. When a retinal break develops they appear as cobweb-like floaters. The retinal tear alters the full thickness of the retina and allows fluid to leak underneath the sensory layer of the retina. In this condition, the retina moves away from the eyewall and this is called a retinal detachment. If the condition is left untreated, it might cause blindness.
Photocoagulation laser surgery uses a laser beam to make small burns around the retinal tear and welds the retina to the underlying eyewall. So laser surgery can prevent or restrict retinal detachment.
Ocular tumours are tumours which grow inside the eye. They are mass of cells that grow and multiply abnormally. They can be benign or malignant tumours. Laser photocoagulation can help to destroy these tumours efficiently.
